TRUMP AND STARMER TALK ABOUT PROSPERITY DEAL – The leaders said negotiations will continue
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and U.S. President Donald Trump discussed “productive negotiations” towards a UK-U.S. economic prosperity deal in a phone call on Sunday evening, a Downing Street spokesperson said.
According to a Downing Street statement, the leaders said negotiations will continue this week and agreed to stay in touch in the coming days.
Britain was hoping to negotiate a deal with the U.S. to avoid a broader round of reciprocal tariffs. Negotiations are said to be intense, with moves to decrease or even abolish a British tax on US big tech firms among the bargaining chips. The US president has announced a 25% import tax will be introduced on all cars imported to the US, a measure expected to hit British luxury car makers such as Rolls-Royce and Aston Martin.
On Friday, Trump said he was open to carving out deals with countries seeking to avoid U.S. tariffs, but those agreements would have to be negotiated after his administration announces reciprocal levies on April 2. Trump said countries, including Britain, had approached the U.S to try to cut deals and avert the reciprocal tariffs.
