SADIQ KHAN has been attacked by the Conservatives over his new car tax changes, warning poor and disabled Londoners could be caught out.
Conservative Assembly Member Susan Hall asked Mr Khan how “poor and disabled” residents in London would manage in the event TfL’s new scrappage scheme runs out of money. It comes after she claimed to have heard the fund was running “very low” with still two weeks to go before the new Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ) expansion comes into force.
The scrappage scheme offers up to £2,000 to scrap a vehicle that does not meet ULEZ standards.
Eligible applicants must be living inside one of the 32 London boroughs or the City of London and be claiming benefits to receive any money.
Speaking at Mayor’s Question Time, Ms Hall said: “I want to talk to you about the car and motorcycle scrappage scheme.
“Which for anyone who isn’t aware is for the poor and disabled in London.
“How much money is in that scheme please?”
Mr Khan replied there was money available but did not have the figures available at the time.
Ms Hall added: “I’ve been told separately that it’s running very low.
“Can you guarantee us that it will actually go beyond October 25?”
