Prime Minister Rishi Sunak defended his government’s plans to detain children arriving in the UK on small boats, as he faced questions from the liaison committee.

Members of the committee, which questions the Prime Minister on policy around three times annually, asked Sunak about the UK’s plans to send migrants arriving on small boats to Rwanda.

In response, Sunak said the government was waiting for legal challenges to the policy to be completed and said he could not guarantee flights to Rwanda would begin by the summer.

Dame Diana Johnson, a Labour MP for Kingston Upon Hull North, challenged Sunak on the use of the word “invasion” to refer to migrants arriving in the UK illegally, and highlighted that British interior minister Suella Braverman had denounced the term “institutionally racist” as being politically charged in a report into London’s Metropolitan Police.

Sunak also said he supported Chinese President Xi Jinping using his influence on Russian President Vladimir Putin to urge him to “withdraw from Ukraine as a precondition to any negotiations
