NEW YORK GOVERNOR UNABLE TO OUST MAYOR ADAMS – Hochul proposes new oversight measures

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, who has been unable to use her power to remove New York City Mayor Eric Adams, has proposed new oversight mechanisms over the mayor’s office in an announcement.

Adams, a former police captain, was indicted last September on corruption charges, accusing him of receiving foreign donations to his election campaigns and luxury travel from Turkish nationals. Adams pleaded not guilty and stated that he would not resign.

Hochul, who said she was “deeply troubled” by the accusations against Adams, further stated in a press conference that the will of the voters, the supremacy and sanctity of democratic elections precludes her from taking action.

Hochul has alternatively proposed for New York to create a new state inspector general overseeing New York City and empowering other city elected officials to sue the federal government if the mayor declines to do so.
