The Israel Defence Forces has unveiled what it claims is a major Hamas military facility underneath Gaza’s biggest hospital.

A group of foreign journalists were given a rare glimpse inside al Shifa, escorted by Israeli soldiers through a narrow stone tunnel to a series of underground bunkers.

The living quarters, located at the end of the tunnel, had an air conditioner, kitchen, bathroom and a pair of metal cots.

They appeared to be out of use, but the Israeli military claimed the facility had been used by Hamas to hold hostages.

Israel’s claims have not been independently verified.

The UK’s foreign secretary has landed in Israel this morning. Lord Cameron will meet Israeli and Palestinian officials as part of his visit, but he has already been taken to the site of Hamas’s deadly 7 October attack.

The former prime minister was taken to Kibbutz Be’eri to see the aftermath of the group’s incursion.  He was joined by Israel’s foreign minister, Eli Cohen, and shown around damaged buildings.
