AMAZON TO START DELIVERING PARCELS ON FOOT FOR NET-ZERO – The pilot program has started across Hackney, Westminster, and Islington in London

Amazon is challenging traditional postal services by introducing parcel deliveries on foot.

In a pilot program across Hackney, Westminster, and Islington in London, couriers will swap vehicles for handcarts to transport packages. This initiative is part of Amazon’s broader strategy to reduce carbon emissions from its delivery fleet, putting its staff alongside postal workers from the 509-year-old Royal Mail.

Nicola Fyfe from Amazon Logistics stated that if the trial is successful, the on-foot delivery model could be expanded to other UK cities. “When combined with our electric bike deliveries and electric vans, on-foot deliveries provide a more sustainable delivery solution,” she said.

Amazon reported that these zero-emission methods now cover 70% of London’s Congestion Charge zone. The approach is particularly beneficial in pedestrianized areas and low-traffic neighborhoods.

Additionally, Amazon has extended its electric cargo bike deliveries to Belfast and Norwich, complementing existing operations in London, Manchester, and Glasgow. The company has committed £300 million to reduce emissions across its UK delivery network.
