THOUSANDS IN THE UK LEFT WITHOUT POWER Scotland’s ‘main artery’ closed off; risk of missing flights due to train disruption

The Met Office has extended a yellow weather warning for wind across parts of Wales and North West England.

Travellers have been warned of delays and potentially hazardous conditions on their way home from the Christmas holidays as the UK braces for Storm Gerrit.

The warning is in place from 6 pm this evening until 3 am tomorrow.   Wind gusts of up to 50-60mph are expected, increasing to 70-75mph on the coasts.

The main route in Fort William is the main route between the highlands of Scotland and the central belt, and the police have closed this stretch of the road – multiple trees are blocking this main artery, the A82.  The area is currently experiencing gale force conditions.

Thousands of people travelling over the festive period are at risk of missing their flights due to multiple signalling failures disrupting trains.

East Midlands Railway said it is unable to run services between London St Pancras and Luton for the time being.

Meanwhile, a Thameslink service calling at the airport was delayed by nearly two hours.

Rail services are likely to be disrupted for the rest of the day due to the fault between London St Pancras and St Albans.

Thameslink issued an alert to passengers which said: “Please do not attempt travel between Bedford and London Bridge until further notice.
