Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expects his plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda to be approved on Monday (April 22), hoping to end a protracted parliamentary battle over the scheme.
There has been deadlock over the bill between the House of Lords and the House of Commons over the past four months. MPs are set to vote on the bill and its amendments from the House of Lords on Monday afternoon.
Last Wednesday the House of Lords rejected for a fourth time the piece of legislation needed for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to push through one of his flagship policies. The bill will continue to be passed between both houses of parliament until the final wording is agreed upon.
The divisive law will pave the way for asylum seekers to be deported to Rwanda.
Sunak has invested huge political capital in the Rwanda scheme whose success or failure might be crucial to his Conservative party’s fortunes in an upcoming election, given his promise it will stop tens of thousands of people arriving without permission in small boats across the Channel.
