SWIATEK, JABEUR AND BADOSA PROGRESS IN DOHA – Iga Swiatek of Poland rolled into the third round of the Qatar Open
Three-time defending champion Iga Swiatek of Poland rolled into the third round of the Qatar Open with a 6-3, 6-2 win on Monday against Maria Sakkari of Greece. The second-seeded Swiatek, who had a bye in the first round of the WTA 1000 event in Doha, trailed 3-2 in the first set before sweeping the next eight games to take control.
Swiatek is trying to become just the second woman in the 21st century to win a tournament four consecutive times after Caroline Wozniacki, who did so at New Haven from 2008-11. Tenth seed Paula Badosa of Spain held on for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 win against Mexico’s Renata Zarazua. Badosa hammered 14 aces and converted six of her nine break chances.
Also through is Ons Jabeur of Tunisia who defeated American McCartney Kessler 6-2, 6-0.
