The Nigerian high commissioner to London, Sarafa Tunji Isola, has said he agrees with the UN secretary-general who criticised measures imposed by various countries against African nations as “travel apartheid”.
Asked about restrictions imposed by the UK, the commissioner told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme: “The reaction in Nigeria is that of travel apartheid. Because Nigeria is actually aligned with the position of the UN secretary-general that the travel ban is apartheid, in the sense that we’re not dealing with an endemic situation, we are dealing with a pandemic situation and what is expected is a global approach, not selective.”
He added: “(Omicron) is classified as a mild variant – no hospitalisation, no death. So the issue is quite different from the Delta variant. I mean, the position has to be taken based on scientific and empirical evidence. It is not a kind of panicky situation.”
