PRIME MINISTER SUNAK ‘WILL ACT’ ON RELEVANT FINDINGS OF INSIDER GAMBLING SCANDAL -Four Conservative candidates are being investigated
Rishi Sunak says he’s “not aware” of other Conservative candidates being looked at by the Gambling Commission over alleged election date bets.
The Gambling Commission is still investigating alleged bets by at least four Conservative candidates, including Craig Williams, the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Prime Minister, and Laura Saunders the Tory candidate in Bristol North West, whose husband – Tony Lee is the party’s director of campaigns, who is also under investigation and who has taken a leave of absence from his role at CCHQ.
The Sunday Times reported that the party’s chief data officer Nick Mason allegedly placed dozens of bets, which the paper says could have generated winnings of thousands of pounds. Mr Williams reportedly placed a £100 bet on a July polling day three days before the date was named. Mr. Mason, who is also a Conservative councillor in Herefordshire, has now taken a leave of absence from his Tory party role, 11 days from election day on 4 July.
In Edinburgh, Sunak says his party is carrying out “internal inquiries” as well
Former minister Tobias Ellwood suggested that Rishi Sunak should suspend any Conservative candidates involved in the ongoing “saga”.
