Kemi Badenoch has emerged as the new leader of the conservative party. Badenock defeated Robert Jenrick in the member’s vote, taking over 56% of 95,000 votes.

Badenoch stated after the announcement that the party is critical to the success story of the United Kingdom, further adding that the conservative party needed to be honest in order to be heard.

Badenoch won with  53,806 votes in the online and postal ballot of party members, beating Jenrick’s total of 41,388.

Badenoch also stated in her victory speech that the party’s job was to hold the Labour government accountable, and craft pledges and a plan for government. “The time has come to tell the truth,” she said, “to stand up for our principles, to plan for our future, to reset our politics and our thinking, and to give our party, and our country, the new start that they deserve,”.

Badenoch is the Tories’ fourth female leader, after Margaret Thatcher, Theresa May and Liz Truss, all of whom became prime minister. She’s the first Conservative leader of colour with African roots.
