Milan’s bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics was environmentally sustainable, the mayor of Cortina told a news conference today. The Italian bid, which also includes Cortina d’Ampezzo, was based on infrastructure which was already 95% in place, said Gianpietro Ghedina, mayor of the Alpine town which hosted the games in 1956. Giancarlo Giorgetti, Italian Under Secretary-of-state, told journalists the games would trigger economic development which would sustain the region’s economy. Only two bids are being considered by the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Milan’s rivals being Stockholm-Are in Sweden
The boss of a children’s charity has accused tech giant Facebook of placing privacy and secrecy ahead of accountability. Chief executive of the NSPCC, Peter Wanless, who has campaigned for social media regulation for the last two years said that end-to-end encryption on Facebook messenger is a risk to keeping children safe online. It comes as the social media company pledged to begin a “new chapter” in its history, as it revealed it will become more focused on privacy at its developer conference in April. The messenger service is taking the lead in Facebook’s new privacy-focused approach, and has been…
British retail bank HSBC UK launched a scheme on Monday to help victims of modern slavery and human trafficking in Britain “rebuild their lives” by giving them access to bank accounts. The bank, part of the London-listed global finance group, said it had been working with law enforcement and charities to identify people who have escaped slavery and trafficking to whom it can offer its “Survivor Bank” service. Banks usually require proof of address and identity documents, like passports, to open accounts, which can exclude victims of slavery and trafficking who may have had these documents confiscated or live in…
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet urged Hong Kong authorities on Monday (June 24) to “consult broadly before passing or amending” a controversial extradition bill or any other legislation. Millions of people demonstrated on the streets of Hong Kong this month against the bill, that would allow people to be extradited to the mainland to face trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party. Bachelet, opening a three-session session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, also said she continues to raise issues related to Xinjiang and other matters with China and that discussions include “unfettered access”…
The “time has passed” for Labour to be able to get its own Brexit deal and any agreement should go to a vote, shadow cabinet minister Andrew Gwynne says. He said the party “will do everything we can to stop no deal”. But Caroline Flint, one of 26 Labour MPs who have urged Jeremy Corbyn not to call for a second referendum, said she would prefer no deal to no Brexit. She said the number of Labour MPs prepared to back the government’s Brexit deal “will go up” in the future. Labour had promised another Brexit vote in certain circumstances,…
Boris Johnson, who has pledged to deliver Brexit on October 31, edged closer to power, when he won by far the most support from UK Conservative Party lawmakers in the final round of the contest to replace British Prime Minister Theresa May. In the fifth and final ballot of Conservative lawmakers, which eliminated Environment Secretary Michael Gove, Johnson was again way out in front: he won 160 out of 313 votes against Hunt’s 77. One ballot paper was rejected. The United Kingdom could be heading towards a constitutional crisis over Brexit with many of the candidates, including Johnson, vying to…

As European Union leaders were expected to discuss their carbon emissions goals at a summit in Brussels, Greenpeace activists sent a warning that “time is running out” on climate. A compromise was emerging on committing the EU to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 late on Wednesday, diminishing the risk of a veto from those most reluctant, including Poland. Late on Wednesday evening, Greenpeace activists projected an animation showing a bomb-shaped earth ready to explode on the European Commission building with messages in several EU languages reading “Climate Emergency”, “Time’s running out”, “EU act now”. A majority of the European…
Iran has shot down a U.S. drone which the elite Revolutionary Guards said was flying over southern Iran, raising fears that a major military confrontation could erupt between Tehran and Washington. Guards website Sepah News said the “spy” drone was brought down over the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan, which is on the Gulf.
