The “time has passed” for Labour to be able to get its own Brexit deal and any agreement should go to a vote, shadow cabinet minister Andrew Gwynne says. He said the party “will do everything we can to stop no deal”. But Caroline Flint, one of 26 Labour MPs who have urged Jeremy Corbyn not to call for a second referendum, said she would prefer no deal to no Brexit. She said the number of Labour MPs prepared to back the government’s Brexit deal “will go up” in the future. Labour had promised another Brexit vote in certain circumstances,…
Boris Johnson, who has pledged to deliver Brexit on October 31, edged closer to power, when he won by far the most support from UK Conservative Party lawmakers in the final round of the contest to replace British Prime Minister Theresa May. In the fifth and final ballot of Conservative lawmakers, which eliminated Environment Secretary Michael Gove, Johnson was again way out in front: he won 160 out of 313 votes against Hunt’s 77. One ballot paper was rejected. The United Kingdom could be heading towards a constitutional crisis over Brexit with many of the candidates, including Johnson, vying to…
President Donald Trump approved retaliatory military strikes against Iran on Thursday before changing his mind, US media report. The New York Times, citing senior White House officials, says strikes were planned against a “handful” of targets in response to the alleged actions of the Iranian’s in the Strait of Hormuz. They say the operation was “in its early planning stages” when Mr Trump stood the US military down. The White House has so far made no comment. This comes after Iran shot down a US spy drone and allegedly damaged tankers with limpet mines. Tehran says the unmanned US aircraft…

As European Union leaders were expected to discuss their carbon emissions goals at a summit in Brussels, Greenpeace activists sent a warning that “time is running out” on climate. A compromise was emerging on committing the EU to net zero carbon emissions by 2050 late on Wednesday, diminishing the risk of a veto from those most reluctant, including Poland. Late on Wednesday evening, Greenpeace activists projected an animation showing a bomb-shaped earth ready to explode on the European Commission building with messages in several EU languages reading “Climate Emergency”, “Time’s running out”, “EU act now”. A majority of the European…
Iran has shot down a U.S. drone which the elite Revolutionary Guards said was flying over southern Iran, raising fears that a major military confrontation could erupt between Tehran and Washington. Guards website Sepah News said the “spy” drone was brought down over the southern Iranian province of Hormozgan, which is on the Gulf. While Iran’s state news agency IRNA carried the same report, identifying the drone as an RQ-4 Global Hawk, a U.S. official said a U.S. Navy MQ-4C Triton had been shot down in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz. The MQ-4C Triton’s manufacturer, Northrop Grumman, says…
Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, the airline pilot who safely landed a US Airways flight on the Hudson River in New York a decade ago, told a congressional panel that pilots of the now-grounded Boeing 737 MAX should get new simulator training before the plane returns to service. Sullenberger, who has blasted Boeing and the Federal Aviation Administration for their roles in the two 737 MAX crashes since October that killed 346 people, also said the U.S. system of certifying new aircraft is not working. His testimony came during a hearing meant to give lawmakers looking into Boeing and the 737 MAX…

The United States will maintain its pressure campaign on Iran and continue to deter aggression in the region but does not want the conflict with Tehran to escalate, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Fears of a confrontation between Iran and the United States have mounted since Washington blamed longtime foe Iran for Thursday’s attacks on two oil tankers near the strategic Strait of Hormuz shipping lane. “President Trump does not want war and we will continue to communicate that message while doing the things that are necessary to protect American interests in the region,” Pompeo said.
