Graduates who set up businesses in Britain that employs 10 people for five years will have their student loans wiped, British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt, one of the two contenders to replace Prime Minister Theresa May next month, pledged on Wednesday. University tuition fees in England are high compared with elsewhere in Europe at around 9,000 pounds a year and has been a hot political topic since the Conservative-led government raised tuition fees, which caused mass student protests in 2010. Hunt also took aim at his rival Boris Johnson, the favourite to become British prime minister who cancelled an appearance…
Growth in the West bank and Gaza must be focused on jobs, the head of the International Monetary Fund said on Wednesday, at the start of a conference on the Trump administration’s $50 billion economic plan for Israeli-Palestinian peace. Business leaders and politicians have gathered in Bahrain to discuss the plan that Washington says is vital to ending the decades-old Israeli-Palestinian conflict. But Palestinian leaders have dismissed it as pointless without a political solution. IMF managing director Christine Lagarde told the opening session that any growth in the Palestinian territories must be “job intensive”. The IMF expects the Palestinian economy…

Milan’s bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics was environmentally sustainable, the mayor of Cortina told a news conference today. The Italian bid, which also includes Cortina d’Ampezzo, was based on infrastructure which was already 95% in place, said Gianpietro Ghedina, mayor of the Alpine town which hosted the games in 1956. Giancarlo Giorgetti, Italian Under Secretary-of-state, told journalists the games would trigger economic development which would sustain the region’s economy. Only two bids are being considered by the International Olympic Committee in Lausanne, Milan’s rivals being Stockholm-Are in Sweden

British retail bank HSBC UK launched a scheme on Monday to help victims of modern slavery and human trafficking in Britain “rebuild their lives” by giving them access to bank accounts. The bank, part of the London-listed global finance group, said it had been working with law enforcement and charities to identify people who have escaped slavery and trafficking to whom it can offer its “Survivor Bank” service. Banks usually require proof of address and identity documents, like passports, to open accounts, which can exclude victims of slavery and trafficking who may have had these documents confiscated or live in…

Millions of people demonstrated on the streets of Hong Kong this month against the bill, that would allow people to be extradited to the mainland to face trial in courts controlled by the Communist Party. Bachelet, opening a three-session session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, also said she continues to raise issues related to Xinjiang and other matters with China and that discussions include “unfettered access”…
