British lawmakers are preparing legal action in case Prime Minister Boris Johnson tries to defy legislation compelling him to seek a further delay to Brexit. An opposition bill which would force Johnson to ask the European Union for an extension to Britain’s departure to avoid an October 31 exit without a transition deal was approved by parliament’s appointed upper chamber, the House of Lords, on Friday and Queen Elizabeth is expected to sign it into law on Monday. Labour MP Hilary Benn said the bill will provide time to go into court, if the government “doesn’t do what’s required..by parliament”.
The five-week suspension of Parliament will begin later today, after MPs are expected to again reject government calls for a snap election. Opposition MPs confirmed they would not back the push for a 15 October poll, insisting a law blocking a no-deal Brexit must be implemented first. At present, UK law states that the country will leave the EU on 31 October, regardless of whether a withdrawal deal has been agreed with Brussels or not. The new legislation, due to get royal assent later, changes that, and will force the PM to seek a delay to 31 January 2020 unless…

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo met with the European Parliament President David Sassoli on Tuesday (September 3) as part of a series of meetings with EU institutions leaders to discuss Transatlantic cooperation. During his two-day stay in the European capital Brussels which started on Monday, Pompeo was scheduled to meet European Council President-elect Charles Michel, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, European Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen, and EU Foreign policy chief nominee Josep Borrell. On social media, Pompeo wrote earlier that the meetings would focus on ‘cooperation on economic and security issues’. He also posted pictures of his dinner…
The PM faces a showdown in Parliament later as MPs aim to take control of the agenda to stop a no-deal Brexit. Ex-chancellor and Tory rebel Philip Hammond said he thought there was enough support for the bill, seeking to delay the UK’s exit date, to pass. No 10 officials warned the prime minister would push for an election on 14 October if the government loses. Boris Johnson said he did not want an election and progress with the EU would be “impossible” if MPs won. Meanwhile, Jeremy Corbyn said the Labour Party was ready for a general election. But…
Italians were doubtful that a new government will last after the president asked Giuseppe Conte to head a coalition of the 5-Star Movement and opposition Democratic Party (PD), a move could that could mark a turning point in Italy’s frayed relations with the European Union. President Sergio Mattarella handed Conte a fresh mandate to form a cabinet barely a week after the low-key lawyer had resigned following a decision by the far-right League party to pull out of its coalition with 5-Star. The move by its leader Matteo Salvini, who had wanted early elections to capitalise on his party’s success…
More than 200 migrants were rescued by the Spanish coast guard as they attempted to make the crossing from Africa to Spain, rescue services said. The rescue comes at a time when Spain is preparing for the arrival on a Spanish warship of 15 migrants from an Italian port following a prolonged standoff between Italian authorities and a Spanish-registered private rescue boat. On Thursday, the coastguard said the migrants from Sub-Saharan Africa were found in three rafts in the Alboran Sea, between northeastern Morocco and southeastern Spain on Wednesday afternoon. Some 18,018 migrants have arrived in Spain so far this…
An ally of British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has denied that the plan to suspend parliament for more than a month before Brexit is a way of stopping debate before a possible no-deal exit from the European Union (EU) on October 31. Johnson’s move has enraged opponents and raises the stakes in the country’s most serious political process in decades. Cabinet office minister Michael Gove, told reporters the move was not an attempt to stop MPs blocking the UK leaving the EU without a deal. With just 65 days until exit day, parliamentarians are battling to prevent the prime minister…
A senior member of the British government said that it would respect any opposition legislation to block a no-deal Brexit, but talk of such a scenario was “actually code for saying ‘let’s stop Brexit.'” Jacob Rees-Mogg, appointed Leader of the House of Commons when Prime Minister Boris Johnson took office in July, said opposition lawmakers were “not worried about no-deal, they just don’t want to leave the European Union.” Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has said he would call a no-confidence vote when the time was right. Rees-Mogg, a eurosceptic who is in charge of managing government business in…
Britain’s opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn has written to 116 Conservative and independent lawmakers offering to find a way to prevent a no-deal Brexit, he said. The letter offers to work together to find a practical way to prevent such an outcome, recipients include several former government ministers, such as Theresa May, Philip Hammond and Greg Clark. Opposition leaders and cross-party MPs also signed the “Church House Declaration” on Tuesday, a legislation that they believe is the best way to avert a no-deal Brexit, rather than a vote of no confidence. MPs from across nations and regions signed the…
