AHMED AL-SHARAA BECOMES SELF DECLARED PRESIDENT OF SYRIA-Al-Sharaa says political transition could take up to 4 years

Former leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), the Islamist rebel group, has become the self-declared president of Syria.

Syria’s de facto leader who led the offensive that overthrew former President Bashar al-Assad last month,has been named president for a transitional phase and the constitution of the country has been suspended,

The announcement was made by the spokesperson for Syria’s new de facto government’s military operations sector, Hassan Abdel Ghani.

Ghani also announced the dissolution of the armed factions in the country, which he said would be absorbed into state institutions, the dissolution of the defunct regime’s army”, security agencies, and the Baath party, which ruled Syria for decades

After al-Assad’s removal, al-Sharaa’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) group became the de facto governing party. 

Al-Sharaa has pledged to embark on a political transition including a national conference, an inclusive government and eventual elections, which he has said political transition to hold. Al-Sharaa has also called for the creation of a new unified national army and security forces
