Cities across the U.S. celebrated Independence Day on Thursday with dramatic displays of fireworks.
The annual show in Washington D.C. lit up skies that, until a few hours before, had been covered by storm clouds.
In Las Vegas, fireworks blended into the glittery lights of the Vegas strip.
And in Los Angeles, neighborhoods across the sprawling city set off their own displays – the same day that they were struck with a 6.4 magnitude earthquake, the largest in two decades in the area.
The quake touched off some fires and damaged buildings north of Los Angeles, but authorities said there were only minor injuries.
The July 4th holiday celebrates the U.S. founders’ declaring independence from Britain in 1776.
