URGENT MEETING CALLED BY UK AMBASSADOR-Cameron says Ukraine ‘has right’ to strike inside Russia with UK weapons

Lord Cameron has stated that Ukraine “absolutely has the right” to use British-supplied weapons as it sees fit, including striking targets inside Russia, a potential move that the Russian foreign ministry claims would have “catastrophic” consequences.

During a trip to Kyiv last week, Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron stated that Ukraine had the “absolutely right” to use British-supplied weapons to strike back at targets inside Russia.

Russia’s foreign ministry claimed the UK ambassador to Moscow had been “summoned” to “reflect on the inevitable catastrophic consequences of such hostile steps by London”.

The UK Foreign Office, on the other hand, denied the story, stating the ambassador had not been “summoned” but had simply attended a diplomatic meeting with ministry officials.

According to the Russian foreign ministry, British ambassador Nigel Casey was summoned for a formal protest after Lord Cameron’s remarks acknowledged that Britain, which had provided Ukraine with billions of pounds in weapons to defend itself in the war against Russia, was now de facto a participant in the conflict.

“Casey was warned that in response to Ukrainian attacks on Russian territory with British weapons, any British military facilities and equipment on the territory of Ukraine and abroad could be targeted,” the foreign ministry stated.

“The ambassador was called upon to reflect on the inevitable catastrophic consequences of such hostile steps by London and immediately refute the belligerent provocative statements of the head of the Foreign Office in the most decisive and unambiguous way.”

A spokeswoman for the UK Foreign Office stated, “The British Ambassador was not summoned. He met with representatives from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss diplomatic issues.

“The Ambassador reiterated the UK’s support for Ukraine in the face of unprovoked Russian aggression, and restated the UK’s position on providing support to Ukraine.”

During Lord Cameron’s visit to Ukraine this week, the foreign secretary reaffirmed Britain’s steadfast support for Ukraine, whose troops have been fighting Russia’s invasion since February 2022, when the Kremlin launched its “special military operation”.
