THOUSANDS RIOT IN ARGENTINA AS CONGRESS DEBATES ECONOMIC REFORM BILL – The South American country’s economy that is buckling under high debt loads
Demonstrators and riot police clashed in Buenos Aires on Thursday (February 1) for the second consecutive day as Argentina’s Congress debated an economic reform bill known as the “omnibus bill.”
Officers with shields pushed back demonstrators rioting at the congressional complex and used water jets to break up the protest. Rioters were seen hurling objects at police officers and armoured vehicles.
The Argentine lower chamber was debating on Thursday the bill proposed by libertarian President Javier Milei to overhaul the South American country’s economy that is buckling under high debt loads, with inflation running at over 200% and myriad capital controls to protect the peso.
Milei faces a major challenge to push the bill through with his coalition only having a minority in both chambers, which means he has to win over allies.
