PAKISTANI CHRISTIANS PROTEST SENTENCING OF CHRISTIAN MAN OVER BLASPHEMY- Christian man, Ehsan Shan Masih, was sentenced to death
Dozens of men and women from Pakistan’s minority Christian community staged a protest in Karachi on Tuesday (July 2) against the death sentence awarded by a court to a Christian man over blasphemy charges.
A court in the city of Sahiwal in Punjab province on Saturday (June 29) sentenced a Christian man, Ehsan Shan Masih, to death for sharing blasphemous content on social media after a mob attacked on Christians last year.
Masih’s lawyer can appeal against the verdict in a higher court.
The protest was organised by The Christian community, Minority Rights March and civil society outside Karachi Press Club.
A Muslim crowd attacked a Christian community in eastern Pakistan in August 2023, vandalising several churches and setting scores of houses on fire after accusing two of its members of desecrating the Koran, police and community leaders said.
The attack took place in Jaranwala in the industrial district of Faisalabad. Police and residents said the attack started after someone allegedly desecrated pages of the Muslim holy book, the Koran, to a mosque prayer leader, which was followed by announcements calling for punishment.
