Turkey and Russia discussed coordination between their forces in Syria after the United States’ decision to withdraw troops from the Arab republic, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov following a meeting with his Turkish counterpart.

Mevlut Cavusoglu said the two countries have the common aim of clearing Syria of all terror organisations. The Turkish foreign minister also said Turkey would continue to be in close cooperation with Iran and Russia on Syria and regional issues.

In an abrupt policy shift, U.S. President Donald Trump has said that Washington would withdraw the roughly 2,000 U.S. troops in Syria, upending a pillar of American policy in the Middle East and alarming U.S. allies.
