Man shot dead by cyclist was inmate on day release

Police have revealed that a man gunned down in front of his girlfriend by a cyclist in Liverpool was a prisoner on day release.

Carl Russell was shot dead in the Belle Vale area of the city over the weekend as he and his partner were getting out of a car.

The 27-year-old had been serving a sentence at HMP Thorn Cross, a category D open jail in Warrington, and a spokesman for the prison said it was assisting Merseyside Police with the investigation.

Officers are still appealing for more information about the targeted shooting, which happened in Cornwood Close shortly before 11.30am on Sunday.

Two men from Belle Vale, aged 33 and 29, were arrested in connection with the murder and were released pending further inquiries on Tuesday.

Police have said the gunman was believed to have been dressed in black with a hi-vis orange jacket, and made off on a pedal bike in the direction of Madeira Drive.

He is thought to have been aged in his late 20s and is of medium build.

Russell’s family have said they will miss “our lovable rogue”, describing him as “an amazing son, brother, uncle, nephew and boyfriend, who idolised his true love Lakyn”.

Their statement continued: “Carl was a mummy’s boy who loved his pops. He would do anything for anyone and had a heart of gold. His family and Lakyn were his world. Carl was no angel – he was our lovable rogue.”

According to the Liverpool Echo, Mr Russell survived a previous attempt on his life in 2010 when two masked gunmen forced their way into his home.
