UK house price growth slowed in April, following the surge of buying in March, according to the Nationwide Building Society.The annual pace of house price growth slowed to 4.9% in April, compared with 5.7% in the previous month. In April alone, house prices rose by just 0.2%, the lowest monthly increase since last November. The number of property sales in March hit a record high, as landlords rushed to beat a rise in stamp duty. There were 165,400 transactions during the month, according to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), higher than the previous peak of 149,000 in January 2007.

A passenger plane thought to have been struck as it approached Heathrow airport was probably not hit by a drone after all, the government says.Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin told MPs the incident was no longer thought to have involved a drone. A police investigation was launched after the pilot of a BA flight from Geneva on 17 April reported an object had struck the front of the aircraft. It was thought to be the first drone collision with an aircraft in the UK. The Airbus A320 was carrying 132 passengers and five crew as it approached the airport. It landed…

A group of eight influential economists have thrown their support behind the Leave campaign in the UK’s referendum on EU membership.The group, Economists for Brexit, claim the UK economy would be boosted by 4% outside the EU. But the Britain Stronger in Europe campaign said their economic model would be “the worst possible alternative”. It is the first time a group of economists have publicly backed Brexit. The economic arguments have so far been tilted towards the Remain camp, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) both warning against leaving.

Apple has reported a decline in iPhone sales for the first time, forcing down quarterly revenues and increasing pressure on the company.The world’s most valuable firm by market value said it sold 51.2 million iPhones in the first three months of 2016. That was down on the 61 million sold a year earlier but slightly better than had been predicted. It had a predictable effect on revenues, which fell by 13% to $50.6bn – just shy of expectations. It meant that Apple recorded the first dip in quarterly sales since 2003.

Asda is to change its price promotions after being singled out by the competition regulator in a probe into supermarket pricing practices.Asda has given a commitment to the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) that it will alter the way it presents promotional deals. The regulator was investigating whether supermarkets were misleading customers with confusing price promotions. The investigation came after a super-complaint by the consumer group Which?. Junior doctors across England have walked out for a second day of strike action as their dispute with the Government over a new contract continues.Medics will again provide no emergency care for patients, a day after more than 20,000 junior doctors walked off the job in protest. NHS bosses have urged patients to continue to use services “wisely”. This week’s strikes are the first time doctors have stopped providing emergency care in the history of the NHS.

Barclays First Quarter Profits Down 25% Barclays has reported a 25% fall in pre-tax profits to £793m for the first quarter of 2016. The bank, which is being overhauled under new boss Jes Staley, said its performance had been hit by widening losses in its “non-core” businesses, including loans to the education, social housing and local authority sectors. Barclays had already warned over first quarter trading, saying alongside its annual results in March that figures were set to be weaker than last year in the face of turbulent market conditions and a “particularly strong March in 2015”.
