The U.N. said on Wednesday (May 4) it welcomed a statement released by the United States that it had agreed with Russia to extend a cessation of hostilities to include Aleppo, where intense day-long violence between Syrian rebels and government forces killed dozens of people. At a special Security Council session convened to discuss the situation in Aleppo, U.N. political chief Jeffrey Feltman urged “parties to abide by this immediately and comprehensively”. Voters are heading to the polls in a series of elections across the UK on what has been dubbed “Super Thursday”.Elections are taking place for the Scottish Parliament, National Assembly of Wales, the Northern Ireland Assembly and for 124 councils in England. New mayors will be elected in London, Bristol, Liverpool and Salford, with UK parliamentary by-elections held in Ogmore and Sheffield Brightside. Police and crime commissioners are also being elected in England and Wales. Problems were reported in Barnet, North London, where the council apologised after some people were unable to vote on Thursday morning.
A proposal aimed at breaking the deadlock in the junior doctors’ dispute through fresh talks has been made by 22 medical colleges and faculties.They want planning for the imposing of new junior doctors’ contracts in England to be postponed for five days. In return, the British Medical Association is asked to suspend for five days any new threats of strikes. The BMA said it was prepared to agree, but the government said it was too late to suspend bringing the contracts in. However, the “door remains open” for talks, the Department of Health said.
New Zealand freediver William Trubridge set his 16th free immersion diving world record in the Bahamas on Saturday (April 30).Trubridge’s dive at the 2016 Vertical Blue Freedive Challenge lasted four minutes and 24 seconds at a depth of 122 metres down Dean’s Blue Hole beating his previous 2011 record set at 121 metres. As the director of the Vertical Blue freediving school, Trubridge holds annual free diving competitions with 35 competitors from 20 countries participating this year. Dean’s Blue Hole is the world’s deepest known salt water blue hole with a depth of 202 metres.
Britain’s Andy Murray edged out Czech Radek Stepanek in three sets in the second round of the Madrid Open on Tuesday (May 3).The world number two got off to a slow start, losing his first service game and eventually managing to win the set on a tie breaker.
