The government has given the go ahead for a new £18bn nuclear power station in the UK after imposing “significant new safeguards” for future projects. The owner of John Lewis and Waitrose has reported a 75% fall in half-year profits to £56.9m. Sir Charlie Mayfield, chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, said the fall reflects “market conditions” and “steps we are taking to adapt the Partnership for the future”. The richest 1% of the UK population owns more than 20 times the wealth of the poorest fifth, according to Oxfam.
