Donald Trump says he wants to expand America’s nuclear arsenal to make the US “top of the pack”. In an interview with the Reuters news agency, he also said he is against a “one-sided” new deal with Russia that would cap the deployment of nuclear warheads. Mr Trump said: “I am the first one that would like to see everybody – nobody have nukes, but we’re never going to fall behind any country even if it’s a friendly country, we’re never going to fall behind on nuclear power. “It would be wonderful, a dream would be that no country would…
The Conservatives have won the Copeland by-election, beating Labour in an area it represented for more than 80 years. Trudy Harrison won with 13,748 votes to Labour’s Gillian Troughton’s 11,601. Mrs Harrison hailed the victory – the first by-election gain by a governing party since 1982 – as “a truly historic event”. Labour’s Gareth Snell held Stoke-on-Trent Central with 7,853 votes, seeing off a challenge from UKIP leader Paul Nuttall who got 5,233. Labour had held both seats since their creation but was forced to defend them when two former frontbenchers, Tristram Hunt and Jamie Reed, resigned as MPs.…
Manchester United’s hat-trick hero Zlatan Ibrahimovic says he is football’s Indiana Jones. The 35-year-old was in sensational form on Thursday night, banging in all three goals in United’s 3-0 Europa Cup victory over St Etienne at Old Trafford and they take his goal tally to 23 in all competitions since his arrival last summer. The Swede is targeting trophies in the Europa League and EFL Cup – they play Southampton in the final next week, live on Sky Sports. He says he succeeds at whichever club he plays, like Harrison Ford’s archaeologist adventurer ‘Indy’ in the famous Steven Spielberg films.…
It was a remarkable moment in modern American political history. President Donald Trump held court for one hour and 16 minutes, fielding multiple questions from reporters, while also airing his grievances with the media. After a fast-paced and at times turbulent four weeks, President Trump rejected the idea of a White House in chaos, describing his administration as a “fine-tuned machine”. But hours later Mr Trump suffered another setback when his choice of replacement national security adviser, Robert Hayward, turned down the role. The dynamics of the presidential news conference were unusual, but it gave him a chance to take…
Some of the UK’s biggest employers’ groups have united in condemning the government’s “outrageous” changes to business rates. Thirteen trade bodies have written a joint letter calling for a clause that could prevent firms appealing against unfair rate rises to be dropped. The group, including the CBI and British Retail Consortium, called the change “punitive”. But a government spokesman said the “claims are simply false”. Bodies that have signed the letter to ministers include the British Retail Consortium, Federation of Small Businesses, Revo, the Association of Convenience Stores, and the British Property Federation. The next business rates revaluation comes into…
Tony Blair is set to provoke a furious political row by calling on opponents of Brexit to “rise up” and persuade voters to change their mind about leaving the EU. In a rallying cry to pro-EU MPs and peers, the former PM will accuse Theresa May of pursuing Brexit “at any cost” and warn it could lead to Scottish independence. Mr Blair, who wants a second referendum and has pledged to campaign to keep the UK in the EU, will deliver his latest attack on Brexit in a powerful speech to Remain supporters. His speech will also be seen as…
Labour frontbenchers who defied Jeremy Corbyn in the Commons Brexit vote will be sent a formal written warning over their behaviour but will not be sacked. Mr Corbyn had imposed a three-line whip on his MPs to vote to back Brexit. But 52 Labour MPs rebelled in Wednesday’s vote, including 11 junior shadow ministers, and three whips whose job it is to impose party discipline. Convention dictates that members of the leader’s shadow team should resign or be sacked if they defy such an order. Some did resign, including shadow business secretary Clive Lewis, who was replaced by Rebecca Long-Bailey.…
President Donald Trump has said he may sign a “brand new” executive order to revive his travel ban – a day after an appeals court ruled it should remain suspended. Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Mr Trump said his administration has “a lot of options” to achieve its aim of restricting immigration from seven Muslim-majority countries. One of those options might involve rewriting the controversial executive order, or replacing it with a new one, to sidestep the legal issues which have caused the travel ban to become held up in the courts. Mr Trump said it is likely…
“This is the day of the thriving Church…the singing Church…the joyful Church,” Pastor says. The BLW President, Reverend (Dr.) Chris Oyakhilome declared the Word of the Spirit to us for February 2017, calling it ‘the Month of Prophecy’ after he read powerful thoughts contained in Ezekiel 37:1-9. Full of inspiration of the Spirit, Pastor Chris declared God’s Word concerning us beginning in this month, saying “by the end of this month, tremendous things would have happened in your life…beautiful things!” CEC Members read Acts 2:14-18, 1 Corinthians 14:3-4 and 1 Corinthians 14:6, revealing the Spirit’s desire to cause tremendous victories…
Theresa May is hoping to use talks to convince EU leaders the UK will remain a “reliable partner” but has been warned about her closeness to Donald Trump. The Prime Minister was holding talks with European leaders including Angela Merkel, Spain’s Mariano Rajoy and Austria’s Christian Kern at the EU Presidency Summit in Malta in an attempt to build Brexit relationships. But EU leaders were keen on shaping a united response to the US President and Mr Kern said: “… the tangible aspects of Mr Trump’s policies are raising some concerns. “It’s not a threat, it could be a catalyst…
