Rishi Sunak will not “save the planet by bankrupting the British people”, the home secretary has said, as she rejected claims that the government was backing away from its net zero commitments. Suella Braverman, one of many Tory MPs on the right of the party who fear green policies may cost the party votes at the general election, said the government’s net zero targets were “goals, not straitjackets”. She commended the prime minister for making “difficult decisions” before his expected move to weaken environmental policies. Ford, alongside other carmakers, has criticised the move. Its UK chair, Lisa Brankin, said: “Our business…
Who can stop Manchester City retaining the Champions League? This is a question many will ponder and for which Red Star Belgrade had no answer. By the end of this opening group game that is. Because, 45 minutes in, Serbia’s champions of the past six years led and threatened to do what Lyon were the last to do five years ago to the day: defeat Pep Guardiola’s side, in Europe, at their home. Yet City are the masters of refusing to be beaten and so cue two Julián Álvarez strikes minutes into the second half which overturned Red Star’s advantage, broke them,…
A review by the financial regulator said that no banks reported that they had closed accounts primarily due to someone’s political views. On Tuesday, the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) said the evidence it has gathered “suggests that no firm closed an account between July 2022 and June 2023 primarily because of a customer’s political views.” It said that “by far” the most common reasons providers gave for closing, suspending, or declining an account were “because it was inactive/dormant or because there were concerns about financial crime.” Anger The probe was launched in July after former Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage had his…
UK levelling-up secretary Michael Gove has announced he will appoint commissioners to take over the Birmingham city council after the local authority declared itself in effect bankrupt. A local inquiry will be launched in “due course” to understand how Birmingham got to this position and the options moving forward, Mr. Gove added, as he addressed the House of Commons on Tuesday. At the beginning of September, Birmingham council issued a Section 114 notice, after it failed to settle a £760 million bill on equal pay claims. It announced the termination of all new spending, with the exception of protecting vulnerable people and statutory services.…
The Online Safety Bill, legalisation to regulate online spaces, has cleared Parliament and is ready to become law. On Tuesday, the Online Safety Bill passed its final Parliamentary debate, with the government promising that it will be “implemented as quickly as possible.” Free speech campaigns warned that the bill will re-introduce “prior restraint for the first time since the 1600s.” RELATED STORIES Online Security: A Guide to Dangers and Safety IN-DEPTH: Parents Should Not Post Children’s Photos Online, Warn Safety Experts The legislation imposes new legal duties on big tech companies and service providers, overseen by the regulator Ofcom. Parents have been taking their children out of school for a few days during mass vaccination drives rather than have them take a live AstraZeneca nasal vaccine which they claim causes “shedding.” In England, parents have started to receive invites for the annual NHS influenza (flu) vaccination programme for children. Parents, alternative health activists, PTFA members and doctors told The Epoch Times that there are some who are planning on taking their children out of school during these mass flu vaccination campaigns. Some say they are concerned that children “shed” the virus for a few days after vaccination, leaving them…
A Senedd petition calling for the reversal of new speed limits on most built-up roads has become the most signed petition in the history of the Welsh Parliament. The number of signatures have risen sharply in the last 24 hours, with more than 135,000 people having put their names to it. The previous record called for non-essential items to be sold in supermarkets during the firebreak lockdown. As of Sunday (September 17), 30mph roads have been reduced to 20mph where cars mix with pedestrians and cyclists. It is thought around 13,000km of road will be affected. The move has proved controversial with…
Sadiq Khan is expected to claim that “hundreds of thousands of dollars” were spent on an anti-Ulez online manipulation campaign on Twitter, citing research conducted after Labour’s unexpected Uxbridge byelection defeat. The London mayor, who will speak at a conference in New York on Tuesday, said he feared that disinformation and manipulation campaigns were “spreading apace” but it was not always clear who was behind them. According to remarks released before his speech, Khan will tell social media companies: “You do not need to wait to be led. You wield incredible power. It’s long overdue you meet your responsibilities and bear down…
Pep Guardiola is proud of Manchester City’s Champions League triumph last season but stated it is “nothing special” compared with winning the trophy on multiple occasions, and so he has urged his team to win back‑to‑back titles. City secured European football’s biggest prize for the first time with victory against Internazionale in Istanbul in May. They begin their defence with the visit of Red Star Belgrade on Tuesday and Guardiola wants his players to focus on emulating Real Madrid, who in 2017 and 2018 became the only team to retain the European Cup since Arrigo Sacchi’s Milan in 1990, in the pre‑Champions League era.…
Boris Johnson described his political allies as “The Munsters” and regularly hummed the Addams Family theme tune while discussing them after he quit as foreign secretary over Theresa May’s proposed Brexit deal, it has been claimed. The former prime minister, who had returned to the Conservative back benches in July 2018, also joked that he had “cornered the market in sex pests” among his supporters, according to a book by the Telegraph’s political editor, Ben Riley-Smith. The alleged remarks, which Johnson’s office has denied, were alluded to in his final grilling from MPs at the powerful Commons liaison committee before…
