Two jailed Reuters reporters, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo, won a Pulitzer Prize on Monday (April 15) for revealing the massacre of 10 Muslim Rohingya men by Buddhist villagers and Myanmar security forces. The two honorees have been jailed for 490 days in Myanmar for their role in uncovering the killings. The two young Reuters reporters, both Myanmar citizens, found a mass grave filled with bones sticking out of the ground at the village of Inn Din, in the heart of the conflict zone of Rakhine state in Myanmar. They went on to gather testimony from perpetrators, witnesses, and…
Environmental activists continued to camp out at London’s Marble Arch on Tuesday (April 16) morning following a city-wide demonstration to force the government to do more to tackle climate change. Roadblocks at locations including Oxford Circus and Waterloo Bridge were due to continue night and day at each site and the demonstrators said the protests could last at least a week. The protests are being led by the British climate group Extinction Rebellion and are to involve demonstrations in 33 countries around the world over the coming days. Extinction Rebellion, which generated headlines with a semi-nude protest in Britain’s parliament…
Firefighters doused the smouldering ruins of Notre-Dame on Tuesday, the morning after a blaze swept through the cathedral in Paris as investigators tried to establish what started the fire. Hundreds of firemen battled the flames which consumed the roof and collapsed the eight-centuries-old cathedral’s spire for more than eight hours before bringing it under control, saving its bell towers and outer walls. The Paris prosecutor’s office said it had launched an inquiry into the fire. Several police sources said they were working on the assumption for now that the fire was accidental.
Tiger Woods says his Masters triumph is “right up there” with his greatest achievements, having faced “serious doubts” he would ever contend again. Woods, 43, won a fifth Green Jacket at Augusta National on Sunday, his first major win in 11 years and a first since having four operations on his back. The 15-time major winner said he “could barely walk” before surgery and his children had seen golf cause “pain”. Woods one-stroke win from fellow Americans Dustin Johnson, Xander Schauffele and Brooks Koepka will take him to number six in the world – he was as low as 1,199…
American Airlines is extending the cancellation of its Boeing 737 Max 8 flights from June until mid-August. The move is to “provide confidence” to customers during the peak summer travel season, the airline said in a letter. Last month, 737 Max aircraft were grounded worldwide following fatal crashes involving Ethiopian Airlines and Indonesia’s Lion Air. Boeing is developing new software for the jet’s anti-stall system, which has come under scrutiny since the crashes. Senior officials at American Airlines said they were “confident” that the Boeing upgrade would be approved by US aviation regulators before 19 August, despite its decision to…
Israeli researchers said they have printed the world’s first 3D heart with blood vessels, describing it as a major breakthrough in engineering replacements for diseased organs. At this stage, scientists printed pink and blue 3D rabbit-size hearts, but Professor Tal Dvir of Tel Aviv University, who led the research for the study said that “larger human hearts require the same technology.” The Israeli team’s findings were published on Monday in Advanced Science, a peer-reviewed, open access journal. It takes about three hours to 3D print a heart, but Dvir said that the hearts themselves require further development as the cells…
British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo where Abe said Japan welcomed the fact that the UK avoided a no-deal Brexit. Hunt told Abe that the government was determined to avoid a no-deal outcome and wanted to continue cooperation with Japan. During his visit to Japan, Hunt will seek to reassure Japanese carmaker Toyota that the government is focused on avoiding a no-deal exit from the European Union and ensuring tariff-tree trade between Britain and the EU. The world’s biggest carmakers including Toyota, BMW and Ford have urged Britain to ensure that they can…
TSB has become the first UK bank to pledge to refund customers who fall victim to any type of fraud.
The “fraud refund guarantee” will cover cases where customers are tricked into authorising payments to fraudsters, as well as unauthorised transactions. The move comes as the bank tries to rebuild its image after an IT meltdown last April left 1.9 million customers unable to access their own money. Banks have been under pressure to help tackle the rise in sophisticated fraud. Some £354m was lost last year through this type of scam, known as a “push” or “authorised” payment fraud, according to banking trade body UK Finance. Financial firms returned just £83m of this to customers.
Julian Assange used the Ecuadorian embassy in London as a “center for spying”, the country’s leader has said. President Moreno – who came to power in 2017 – said of the decision to end Assange’s seven-year stay in the embassy: “Any attempt to destabilise is a reprehensible act for Ecuador because we are a sovereign nation and respectful of the politics of each country.” Speaking to the Guardian, President Moreno claimed Ecuador’s old government provided facilities within the embassy “to interfere” with other states.
To some, Australian-born Assange is a hero for exposing what supporters cast as an abuse of power and for championing freedom of the press and free speech, but to others, he is a dangerous figure who has undermined the security of the United States and has too many ties to Russia. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said the UK government should not extradite Julian Assange to the US, where he faces a computer hacking charge. Mr Corbyn said Assange should not be extradited “for exposing evidence of atrocities in Iraq and Afghanistan”. There have also been calls in Germany…
