Environmental activists continued to camp out at London’s Marble Arch on Tuesday (April 16) morning following a city-wide demonstration to force the government to do more to tackle climate change. Roadblocks at locations including Oxford Circus and Waterloo Bridge were due to continue night and day at each site and the demonstrators said the protests could last at least a week. The protests are being led by the British climate group Extinction Rebellion and are to involve demonstrations in 33 countries around the world over the coming days. Firefighters doused the smouldering ruins of Notre-Dame on Tuesday, the morning after a blaze swept through the cathedral in Paris as investigators tried to establish what started the fire. Hundreds of firemen battled the flames which consumed the roof and collapsed the eight-centuries-old cathedral’s spire for more than eight hours before bringing it under control, saving its bell towers and outer walls. The Paris prosecutor’s office said it had launched an inquiry into the fire. Several police sources said they were working on the assumption for now that the fire was accidental.

American Airlines is extending the cancellation of its Boeing 737 Max 8 flights from June until mid-August. The move is to “provide confidence” to customers during the peak summer travel season, the airline said in a letter. Last month, 737 Max aircraft were grounded worldwide following fatal crashes involving Ethiopian Airlines and Indonesia’s Lion Air. Boeing is developing new software for the jet’s anti-stall system, which has come under scrutiny since the crashes. Israeli researchers said they have printed the world’s first 3D heart with blood vessels, describing it as a major breakthrough in engineering replacements for diseased organs. At this stage, scientists printed pink and blue 3D rabbit-size hearts, but Professor Tal Dvir of Tel Aviv University, who led the research for the study said that “larger human hearts require the same technology.” The Israeli team’s findings were published on Monday in Advanced Science, a peer-reviewed, open access journal. British Foreign Minister Jeremy Hunt met Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Tokyo where Abe said Japan welcomed the fact that the UK avoided a no-deal Brexit. The “fraud refund guarantee” will cover cases where customers are tricked into authorising payments to fraudsters, as well as unauthorised transactions. The move comes as the bank tries to rebuild its image after an IT meltdown last April left 1.9 million customers unable to access their own money. Banks have been under pressure to help tackle the rise in sophisticated fraud. Some £354m was lost last year through this type of scam, known as a “push” or “authorised” payment fraud, according to banking trade body UK Finance. Financial firms returned just £83m of this to customers.

Julian Assange used the Ecuadorian embassy in London as a “center for spying”, the country’s leader has said.
