Spain’s Supreme Court sentenced nine Catalan separatist leaders to between nine and 13 years in prison for sedition over their role in the region’s failed bid for independence in 2017. The three other defendants in the landmark ruling over a banned referendum and short-lived independence declaration were found guilty only of disobedience and not sentenced to prison. All defendants were acquitted of the most severe charge, rebellion. The longest prison term went to former Catalan deputy leader Oriol Junqueras, who was given 13 years. Four of the leaders were convicted of misuse of public funds. Separatist protests have been largely…

UK opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said there was a strong possibility of a national election before Christmas. In an interview broadcast on Sunday (October 13), he told Sky News that he was also unlikely to support a deal agreed between Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the European Union. “If it creates a border down the Irish Sea rather than on the Irish border itself, I can see that bringing problems,” he said, adding that he would caution British lawmakers against backing a confirmatory referendum on a deal. Britain’s Liberal Democrat party leader Jo Swinson said on Sunday she…

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he did not want to give a running commentary on Brexit talks when asked whether Northern Ireland would be leaving the EU customs union amid hopes an agreement can be found before an Oct. 31 deadline. Speaking during a school visit in South Buckinghamshire, Johnson asked reporters to “look at everything I’ve said previously and you can draw your own conclusions from that.” Johnson met with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar in Cheshire on Thursday (October 10) in a last ditch bid to avert an acrimonious separation or another delay after Brexit descended into…

Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn accused Prime Minister Boris Johnson of dragging politically neutral Queen Elizabeth into the country’s looming general election by holding a Queen’s Speech. Corbyn also promised Britain a radical new political agenda. Britain is trapped in an acute political crisis over voters’ 2016 decision to leave the European Union and PM Johnson’s government has no majority in parliament, no agreed plan for leaving the bloc, and only three weeks until the exit deadline.
