LONDON/MADRID (Reuters) – A British man who contracted the new coronavirus while attending a conference in Singapore may have led to seven other people catching the disease when he stopped off at a chalet in a French mountain village on his way home, health experts said on Sunday. The man, Britain’s third case of the virus, stayed for four days in the chalet in Les Contamines-Montjoie late last month, under the same roof as a group of British holidaymakers as well as a British family who lived in the village. Five people from that group in the Alpine ski resort,…
Heavy rain and gusts of wind reaching more than 90mph brought widespread flooding and travel disruption as Storm Ciara hit the UK. Trees were toppled, buildings were damaged and some homes had to be evacuated as rivers burst their banks. Thousands of people were left without electricity and sporting events were cancelled due to the weather. Airlines also cancelled hundreds of flights, while several rail firms urged passengers not to travel. Ferry passengers also faced delays and cancellations, and drivers were warned to take extra care. Large parts of the UK were covered by an amber warning for very strong…
Australia all-rounder Ellyse Perry has smashed a slew of records in a sparkling cricketing career and now hopes to play a part in another by helping draw the biggest crowd to a women’s sporting event at next month’s T20 World Cup final. The record has long been held by the 1999 women’s soccer World Cup final, which saw 90,185 pack into the Rose Bowl in California to watch the United States defeat China. However, T20 World Cup organisers hope the final at the 100,000-capacity Melbourne Cricket Ground can trump it — particularly if the formidable host nation features. While the…
West Ham United co-owner David Gold has offered his support to Manchester United executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward and said threats and violent protests targeting club officials “cannot be tolerated”. Police are investigating an attack on Woodward’s home last month after videos emerged on social media showing a group of people in hoods chanting threats and throwing flares over the gate. “I know exactly what Ed’s experienced. I’ve experienced it four or five times myself,” Gold told the British media. Gold and co-owner David Sullivan were forced to leave the directors box amid chaotic scenes during a Premier League defeat by…
Another 41 people on a cruise liner off Japan tested positive for coronavirus, bringing the total cases confirmed on the ship to 61, Japan’s health minister said. The jump in infected passengers on the cruise liner comes as the vessel was under a two-week quarantine with about 3,700 people in it. The new cases were out of the 171 remaining test results, Health Minister Katsunobu Kato told reporters. The new cases take the total number of coronavirus infections in Japan to more than 80. But Kato said the cruise cases are not counted as cases in Japan, because the cruise…
U.S. Democratic presidential candidates hit the campaign trail on Thursday New Hampshire after an array of problems delayed results from Monday night’s Iowa caucuses, the first 2020 presidential nominating contest which has not yet resulted in a clear winner. New Hampshire hosts the next nominating contest early next week. Senator Bernie Sanders, who narrowly lost the Democratic presidential nomination to Hillary Clinton in 2016, held a news conference in Manchester and said the chaotic Iowa caucus was a “screwup” that was unfair to all candidates. With 97% of precincts counted, Pete Buttigieg, the 38-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Indiana,…
If Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald can turn the Irish nationalist party’s opinion poll lead into a historic election breakthrough this week, it will be healthcare and housing not their signature demand for a united Ireland that will have put them on the brink of power. Under new leader McDonald, a 50-year-old Dubliner with no link to the Northern Ireland conflict, the party has focused on inequality created by a five-year economic boom to win voters who shunned the party in the past. Opinion polls on Monday (February 3) showed party for the first time in front of the…

At least 200 health workers rallied outside of Hong Kong’s central government offices on Wednesday to demand the full closure of the territory’s border to mainland China as their strike entered its third day. Nevertheless, striking health workers demand the closure of the remaining borders, as well as better protection for frontline medical workers treating…
