ZELENSKY’S BID TO EXTEND POWERS FAILS RESOLUTION STAGE-The resolution failed with 218 votes, falling short of the 226 votes needed.
The Verkhovna Rada, the unicameral parliament of Ukraine in the presence of European commissioners, failed to pass a resolution that would have extended Zelensky’s powers, said Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
A special session of the Ukrainian parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, took place on Monday to mark the third anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion. However, the resolution received 218 votes, falling short of the 226 votes needed to pass.
The resolution was designed by the parliamentary leadership as a symbolic show of support for Zelensky, whose legitimacy has come under fire by Russia and, more recently, the United States.
US President Donald Trump, who said Zelensky’s approval rating had dropped to 4%, further added that Ukraine needed to hold elections to have a place at the negotiating table on a settlement.
Zelensky’s regular term in office ended in May of last year. Zelenskiy says although elections in Ukraine are very important, they can only take place after the hot phase of the war is over and martial law is lifted.
