A woman has died after a fire broke out at residential units for adults with learning disabilities in northeast London.
More than 70 firefighters tackled the blaze in Chingford after they were called at about 2.14am on Friday.
London Fire Brigade said 12 people left the three-storey block before they arrived but confirmed one woman had died.
Station manager Keith Wilson, who is at the scene, said: “Firefighters have been working hard to contain the spread of the fire which has destroyed the roof. Crews expect to be here into the day, tackling hot spots.”
The fire took over half of the ground floor and first floor plus all of the roof at its height.
There were 10 fire engines and an aerial ladder platform from at least five stations at the scene.
Pictures showed flames engulfing the roof of the building, which houses Connington Court and Connington House – both run by Sequence Care.
According to Care Quality Commission documents, they provide support to adults with autism and other complex needs.
The cause of the fire is not known at this time.
