British environment minister Michael Gove said he believed the government could win a vote in parliament on its Brexit deal, again arguing that the alternatives to the agreement were much worse.

Speaking earlier Gove said there was a real risk of a second referendum or getting a “less good deal or no deal at all” if members of parliament didn’t vote for the current deal.

Gove also expressed concerns about the withdrawal treaty’s ‘backstop’ provision which could align Northern Ireland more closely with the EU than the rest of the United Kingdom if no other way could be found to avoid a hard border with the Republic of Ireland.

British Prime Minister Theresa May sealed a deal with EU leaders that would see Britain leave the bloc on March 29 with continued close ties, but the odds look stacked against her getting it approved by a deeply divided British parliament.
