Former England player Ray Wilkins, who won 84 caps for his country, is “critically ill” after suffering a cardiac arrest, his wife has said.
Jackie Wilkins told the Daily Mirror: “He’s in hospital, he’s had a cardiac arrest and is in intensive care.
“He’s not in a good state at all, I’m afraid. He’s critically ill.
“The cardiac arrest led to a fall which has meant he’s had to be put in an induced coma.
“It’s very, very bad.”
The 61-year-old ex-Chelsea, Manchester United and AC Milan midfielder played for 12 sides and was on the coaching staff of several more, but is commonly associated with Chelsea.
He started his career there and spent six years with the Blues, while also having several stints as assistant manager. On one occasion, he led the side on a caretaker basis.
Following the reports Chelsea urged Wilkins to “keep fighting”, tweeting: “The thoughts of everybody at Chelsea Football Club are with Ray Wilkins and his family tonight. Keep fighting Ray, you have our love and support.”
Former Chelsea captain Frank Lampard said all his “thoughts and strength” were with Wilkins, describing him as an “absolute Gentleman” in an Instagram post.
Ex-Chelsea striker Didier Drogba said in an Instagram post: “Just found out about the news, be strong Ray Wilkins and family. We blue army are sending you our prayers on this religious day”.
Wilkins’ former club Queens Park Rangers said it was “extremely saddened” by the news.
“All our prayers are with you, Ray,” the club tweeted.
