A lorry driver has died after several heavy goods vehicles crashed and caught fire on the M40 in Warwickshire.

When paramedics arrived they found two lorries on fire and a third just in front, West Midlands Ambulance Service (WMAS) said.

A WMAS spokesman said: “Unfortunately, the driver of one lorry died at the scene.

“The driver of a second lorry, a man in his 60s, was treated at the scene for a medical condition and was taken to Warwick hospital.

“The third driver was uninjured.”

The motorway has been closed in both directions and drivers cannot join the M40 from the M42.

Highways England warned that the motorway could remain shut between Warwick and Henley-in-Arden throughout Friday after the early morning crash.

Warwickshire Police posted video of the fire on social media and said officers were still at the scene of the collision on the northbound carriageway, between junctions 15 and 16.

The force said: “The road is expected to be closed for the majority of the morning, while the southbound stretch of the M40 from junctions 15 to 16 is also closed at this time due to a separate lorry fire.
