NEW ORLEANS TRUCK ATTACK SUSPECT SERVED IN U.S. ARMY – Jabbar flew an ISIS flag from his truckĀ
A U.S. Army veteran flying an ISIS flag from his truck swerved around makeshift barriers and ploughed into New Orleans’ crowded French Quarter on New Year’s Day, killing 15 people.
Officials said the attack may have been carried out with the help of others. The suspect, identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was killed in a shootout with police after ramming the crowd.
Jabbar was a U.S. citizen from Texas who once served in Afghanistan. A photograph on the Facebook page of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, showed a man matching images of Jabbar released by the FBI.
His position in the U.S. Army as a human resource and information technology specialist between 2007 to 2015 was confirmed by an army official.
He then joined the Army Reserve as an IT specialist until 2020, holding the rank of staff sergeant at the end of service, the army official said. Jabbar deployed to Afghanistan from February 2009 to January 2010, they added.
