KING UNVEILS KEIR STARMER’S PRIORITIES FOR GOVERNMENT State Opening of Parliament begins a new Government session

The government has revealed at least 35 new bills in the King’s Speech – including on planning reform, rail nationalisation, education and health.

The government wants all new tax and spending changes to be assessed by the OBR. They also announced plans to establish a National Wealth Fund.

The Government also plans to liberalise the planning laws to “get Britain building”.

Further, an employment rights bill was also announced with plans to increase devolution to metro mayors and combined authorities in England.

Despite concerns over cost, the Government plans to take Rail companies into public ownership, local municipal leaders will get greater powers over buses, and Great British Rail will be established to govern the train system.

At further cost, we see that Great British Energy will be set up among a raft of new planned legislation, and the water regulator will get greater power.

On Immigration, the Government will set up a Border Security Command, but with little detail as to how this will halt the numbers travelling to the UK.

Amongst a very crowded agenda, there are additional measures in the areas of Education, Skills and Housing with new rights for renters and leaseholds and commonholds will be reformed.

Shockingly Digital IDs, rejected by Labour’s Leadership just ten days ago were also included in the King’s speech.  Critics have questioned who is setting and changing Labour’s policies in the background.

On the NHS the government promises to give Mental health the same attention and focus as physical health.

The Government will maintain the Conservatives’ rolling ban on smoking and vapes will be subject to new restrictions – including on advertising.

And finally, the King announced the Labour policy that Hereditary peers would lose their right to sit in the House of Lords.
