Italian foreign minister Antonio Tajani paid an official visit to Damascus today.
During his visit, Tajani met with Syria’s de facto ruler, Ahmed al-Sharaa, and Syrian Foreign minister, Asaad Hassan al-Shibani.
Speaking at a joint news conference, Shibani said he will visit European countries in the coming period and extended an invitation to visit Syria to all foreign delegations and private sector representatives, in order to boost economic cooperation and open opportunities to the middle eastern country.
Tajani expressed Italy’s desire to function as a bridge between Syria and the EU, referring to a meeting held in Rome on Thursday between Italy, France, Germany, UK, U.S and EU,
Tijani also emphasised the need to revisit sanctions issued by foreign countries against Bashar al-Assad’s government, in a way that they would not end up harming the Syrian people.
