A British man has been killed and another injured after a suspected deliberate hit-and-run in Cyprus.

Cyprus Police said the two men, aged 39 and 32, were hit as they walked along a road near Paphos at about 2.30am on Saturday.

The older man was later confirmed to have died.

He has been named as Charlie Birch from Powys, Wales.

The second man was taken to a nearby hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police were called to an accident at 3am when someone reported two people lying on the road, the Cyprus Mail reported.

There had reportedly been an altercation at a bar in Coral Bay during which the two Britons reportedly tried to defend a woman who was being hit by one of the suspects.

A car used in the alleged attack was later found by police after being dumped in the sea.

Friends have paid tribute to Mr Birch on Facebook.
