Theresa May was unable to make a breakthrough in Brussels this evening despite last-ditch talks over her Brexit deal with EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

The pair made progress in the crucial talks but have yet to reach a final deal, an EU spokesman said.

The Prime Minister said she will return on Saturday for further talks as there are “some further issues that need resolution”.

Mrs Mat travelled to meet Mr Juncker on Wednesday to discuss the UK’s future relationship with the European Union.

“I will be returning on Saturday for further meetings, including again with President Juncker, to discuss how we can ensure that we can conclude this process in the way which is in interests in all our people,” Mrs May said in televised comments to the BBC.

“There are some further issues that need resolution,” she said.

Mrs May met the EU’s chief executive for about an hour and a half to try to hammer out a blueprint for Britain’s ties after it leaves the bloc and to get commitments that will appease rebels at home opposed to her Brexit draft treaty.

“Very good progress was made in the meeting between President Juncker and Prime Minister Theresa May. Work is continuing,” an EU Commission spokesman said after the meeting ended, declining to give more details.

Outstanding issues include Spanish opposition over Gibraltar, with EU diplomats saying EU states’ concerns over fishing rights and future trade ties have largely been addressed in the political declaration on the EU-UK future ties that would form a package with the legally binding divorce deal.

EU envoys are set to meet on Thursday morning to discuss the outline of future ties. Negotiators will the look at it again at a meeting set for Friday before a summit on Sunday.

However, the Sunday summit is in jeopardy after Germany threatened to scrap it amid a row over Mrs May’s deal.
