Toyota Motor Corp is targeting developing in the next five years driver assistance systems that integrate artificial intelligence to improve vehicle safety, the head of its advanced research division said. Gill Pratt, CEO of recently set up Toyota Research Institute, the Japanese automaker’s research and development company that focuses on AI, said it aims to improve car safety by enabling vehicles to anticipate and avoid potential accident situations. Toyota has said the institute will spend $1 billion over the next five years, as competition to develop self-driving cars intensifies.

Algeria has temporarily blocked access to social media across the country in an attempt to fight cheating in secondary school exams. Almost half of students are being forced to retake the baccalaureate exam, which started on Sunday, after the initial session was marred by online leaking. The number of people displaced by conflict is at the highest level ever recorded, the UN refugee agency says. It estimates that 65.3m people were either refugees, asylum seekers or internally displaced at the end of 2015, an increase of 5m in a year. MH370 have released photographs of personal items that washed up on a Madagascar beach, hoping to identify them. Some 20 items found include purses, backpacks and part of a laptop case. There are no labels identifying them as belonging to the 239 people on board the jet that vanished two years ago. UK sports fashion retailer JD Sports has received a sales boost from the Euro 2016 football tournament in recent weeks. As a result, it was set to deliver “excellent” half-year results. The trading update came ahead of the retailer’s annual shareholder meeting. Shares  have risen 86% in the past year, and its market value has now overtaken that of rival Sports Direct. Microsoft has teamed up with California-based technology start-up Kind Financial, which helps businesses and government agencies track sales of legalised marijuana “from seed to sale”. It is the first-ever partnership of its kind for Microsoft. Kind has been selling its marijuana tracking software to businesses and governments for some three years. The start-up will now be able work on Microsoft’s government cloud. Microsoft told the Weed Blog it was looking forward to working with Kind “to help our government customers launch successful regulatory programs.”
