The number of people seeking asylum in Germany this year will be as high as 1.5 million – almost double the previous estimate, German media report. The German government has not confirmed the new estimate, which comes from an internal official report cited by popular daily Bild. The report warns that services helping refugees will not be able to cope. Separately, a centre-right regional minister put the expected total at 1.2-1.5 million for this year. The German government previously estimated the number of asylum claims this year to reach 800,000 to one million in total. Many are refugees fleeing the…
Turkish F-16 fighter jets were scrambled after a Russian warplane violated Turkey’s air space on Saturday, the foreign ministry said. Russia said the incident was a “navigational error” and that it has “clarified” the matter to Ankara. Turkish jets patrolling the border were also “harassed” by an unidentified plane on Sunday, Turkey said. Russia has been carrying out air strikes in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad. Turkey has called the Russian strikes a “grave mistake”. On Monday Russia said it had “continued performing pinpoint strikes” on IS targets in Syria, carrying out 25 sorties and hitting nine Islamic…
Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians to stop their “unruly behaviour” to achieve progress. In an address to mark 55 years of independence from British rule, he said Nigerians would have to “face squarely” the economic crisis caused by the sharp fall in oil prices. It would require “prudent house-keeping”, and tackling corruption in the oil sector, Mr Buhari added. It was his first address to the nation since becoming president in May. “We must change our unruly behaviour in schools, hospitals, market places, motor parks, on the roads, in homes and offices,” Mr Buhari said. “To bring…
Donald Trump has said he would send home all Syrian refugees the US accepts, if he becomes president. The billionaire, who is the current frontrunner in the Republican race for the White House, told a New Hampshire rally: “If I win, they’re going back.” It marks a reversal in policy – earlier this month he told Fox News the US should take in more refugees. A migrant crisis has gripped parts of Europe and the US has pledged to take 10,000 refugees from Syria next year. Half a million people have crossed the Mediterranean into Europe in 2015, with the…
A law banning smoking in vehicles carrying children has come into force in England and Wales. Drivers and passengers who break the law could face a penalty fine of £50 – but police say they will take a non-confrontational approach initially. Whenever an under-18 is in the car, smokers will still be liable even if the windows are down or sunroof open. But the law will not apply to people who are driving in a convertible which has the roof down. Nor does it apply to e-cigarettes. The Scottish Parliament is expected to consider bringing in its own law banning…
Not knowing where to start looking for a removal man, Becky Szenk and her fiancé Mark turned toFacebook. Soon enough Becky, 22, and Mark Higgins found someone by the name of Lee Green, who they thought would help them move the entire contents of the flat. On the appointed day, two workers arrived and loaded up the van with their belongings – worth around £10,000. But that was the last they saw of the men and their worldly goods. What appeared to be professionalism to get a job done quickly in fact turned out to be haste to get away. As…
The Messenger Angel, Rhapsody of Realities wins atheists, speaking the Ukrainian language in Belarus. During one of several ReachOut Campaigns in the nation of Ukraine, Rhapsody of Realities partners ministered to a congregation in Minsk, Belarus, resulting in the salvation of many, including those who had been atheists. On this special occasion, a lady who had prayed earnestly for several years for the salvation of her father wept uncontrollably in praise to God as she watched him turn his life over to Jesus. The Ukrainian language is the official language of Ukraine, spoken by an estimated 30 million people. It…
A woman in the US state of Georgia has been executed despite a number of last-ditch appeals, including one by the Pope, to try to block her execution. Kelly Gissendaner, 47, was the first woman put to death in the southern US state in 70 years. Lawyers filed at least three appeals with the US Supreme Court to try to delay the sentence hours before she died. Gissendaner planned but did not carry out her husband’s murder in 1997. Her former lover, Gregory Owen, who killed Douglas Gissendaner, was given life in prison as part of a plea bargain. Pope…
