Independent school head teachers have said there was a “major problem” with an exam taken last summer.They have published a report saying the results of the IGCSE in English language were flawed and pupils received unfair grades. The exam board, Cambridge International Exams, said it was “confident” in the accuracy of the results. The Headmasters’ and Headmistresses’ Conference (HMC) and Girls’ School Association said an “unprecedented number” of schools had come forward with concerns about the results.

State-backed lender Royal Bank of Scotland is axing around 600 jobs as it shuts 32 branches of NatWest. Trade union Unite said the banking group was to announce closures across its NatWest network in the North, the Midlands, east of England and London. In addition, hundreds of branches will change their opening hours, the union said. RBS, which remains 73% owned by the taxpayer following its state rescue at the height of the financial crisis, confirmed that jobs were to go. UK house price inflation is set for a slowdown over the coming months, a survey by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Rics) suggests. It said the forthcoming referendum on European Union membership and elections in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would cool the housing market. Rics said the Stamp Duty increases for landlords that came in on 1 April were another factor. The Halifax has also said that the EU vote is likely to slow the market. Poundland has reported a 4.9% fall in like-for-like sales in the second half of its financial year to 27 March.The company blamed “difficult” market conditions over the last few months and the disruption caused by last year’s takeover of 99p Stores. The conversion of 99p Stores to Poundland shops will be completed by the end of April, which is “well ahead of plans”, the company said. BP holds its annual shareholders’ meeting on Thursday with some investors planning to vote against chief executive Bob Dudley’s 20% pay rise. Shareholders in the oil giant are concerned that rises for Mr Dudley and other executives come despite job cuts and falling profits. Those who have spoken out include Aberdeen Asset Management and Royal London Asset Management. But BP said the firm’s performance beat most measures that determine pay. The pay rise for Mr Dudley takes his salary package to £14m.
Two teenage girls have been arrested on suspicion of abducting a toddler in Newcastle city centre. The three-year-old girl went missing from the Primark store on Northumberland Street at 4.55pm on Wednesday. A major search was launched, with officers scouring CCTV belonging to the council and local shops. Police found the girl over an hour later several miles away in Gosforth. The suspects are aged 13 and 14. The toddler was “quickly reunited with her mother” after the incident.
