The owner of British Gas, Centrica, has cut 800 jobs in the first three months of the year.The cull forms part of the 3,000 job-cuts Centrica had already scheduled for 2016. The company is in the midst of a cost-cutting programme and last summer announced it would be slashing 6,000 jobs in an attempt to save £750m a year. The company’s debt fell to £4.4bn in the January to March period. It expects full year operating cash flow to be “in excess” of £2bn; last year it was £2.3bn.

The price of oil has dropped sharply after a meeting of oil producers failed to agree a cap on output.Brent crude fell 7% at one point, but then recovered slightly to stand down $1.87, or 4.3%, at $41.23 a barrel. The meeting in Qatar was attended by most members of oil producers’ group Opec, including Saudi Arabia, but not Iran. Saudi Arabia, the world’s biggest exporter, had been prepared to freeze output if all Opec members had agreed.

A police investigation is under way after a passenger plane approaching Heathrow Airport was hit by what is believed to have been a drone.The British Airways flight from Geneva, with 132 passengers and five crew on board, was hit as it approached the London airport at 12:50 BST on Sunday. If confirmed, it’s thought it would be the first such incident in the UK. BA said it would give the police “every assistance with their investigation”. No arrests have been made, police say. The Metropolitan Police’s aviation security unit based at Heathrow will lead the investigation.

The UK would be “permanently poorer” outside the European Union, Chancellor George Osborne has warned ahead of the in-out vote on membership on 23 June.A Treasury analysis on the cost of an EU exit will say the UK economy could be 6% smaller – the equivalent of £4,300 a year per household – by 2030. Mr Osborne said the report, being published on Monday, “steps away from the rhetoric” and sets out the facts. Conservative MP John Redwood, who is campaigning for an Out vote, said the Treasury’s forecasts for 2030 were “completely worthless” given its past record.

China’s economy grew at an annual rate of 6.7% in the first quarter of the year, says the government.It is the slowest quarterly growth in the Chinese economy in seven years, but in line with expectations and China’s own growth targets. In the final quarter of last year, the economy expanded by 6.8%. Friday’s figures confirm the slowing trend in the world’s second largest economy. Food bank usage has hit record levels – with 1.1 million emergency parcels given out by a leading charity in the last year.The Trussell Trust handed over 1,109,309 three-day parcels during 2015-16 – up 2% on the previous year. More than 415,000 of the parcels went to children. Estimates suggest more than 500,000 people used one of the trust’s 424 food banks. The trust said a million emergency food supplies a year must not become the “new normal”.
