Sainsbury’s has reported a fall in annual profits as the supermarket price war continued to hurt the retailer.Underlying profits, which strip out one-off charges, fell to £587m for the year to 12 March. That was down from £681m in the previous year. Pre-tax profits for the year were £548m, reversing last year’s £72m loss. That result was hit by charges related to the falling value of its properties. In April, Sainsbury’s agreed to buy Argos-owner Home Retail Group. Doctors treated a one-year-old girl who was pulled out alive from the rubble of a building in Kenya’s capital on Tuesday (May 3), over 72 hours after it collapse. Red Cross spokeswoman Arnolda Shiundu told Reuters that the girl was rescued at about 4 a.m. and was receiving medical attention at Kenyatta National Hospital. Banking giant HSBC has reported a 14% drop in profits for the first quarter following “extreme levels of volatility” in financial markets at the start of the year. Profit before tax came in at $6.1bn (£4.17bn) for the three months to March, down from $7.1bn a year ago. However, analysts had expected a far steeper fall in profits. HSBC chief executive Stuart Gulliver said the bank had been “resilient in tough market conditions”. Adjusted pre-tax profits, including currency effects and one-off items, fell 18% to $5.4bn (£3.7bn).

Fewer than one in five eligible voters in some parts of England previously chose anyone to represent them in local elections, raising fears of a democratic deficit.BBC News analysis of voting patterns in 2,500 council wards since 2012 shows wide disparities. Most of the areas where the fewest people voted in recent elections are in the North. The Electoral Reform Society said it was vital people turned out to vote.
