The United Nations opened an international conference focused on Israeli-Palestinian peace in Geneva on Wednesday (June 29). The two-day conference brings negotiators and academics back together after U.S. efforts to broker a two-state solution fell apart in 2014. Speaking at the conference, Palestinian negotiator Nabil Shaath told delegates his people remained committed to a way forward. Palestinian delegates say continuous Israeli settlement expansion in occupied territory has dimmed any prospect for the viable state they seek in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with a capital in Arab East Jerusalem.
The UK government is to defer a decision on airport expansion until the new Conservative Party leader is elected, Reporters understands. It makes a promised decision this year much less likely. Campaigners had said the Brexit vote “must cast doubts” on whether Heathrow Airport would get a third runway. But on Thursday, a Heathrow spokesman said expansion “must be a key building block in the government’s Brexit plan” if the UK wants to be confident. “It will allow British exporters to trade with all the growing markets of the world, strengthening Britain’s position as one of the great trading nations,”…
Parents of children who died on a children’s cardiac ward were let down, according to an independent review. Despite making 32 recommendations, the report said the outcomes of care at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children were “broadly comparable” with other specialist units for children with heart conditions. The chair of the review, Eleanor Grey QC, said: “What we’ve tried to do, in order to be accountable and transparent, about our work is not only publish the main report – which tries to look at the system on a systemic basis – but also to produce 27 individual reports for families…
Michael Gove has joined the race to be the next Tory leader saying he does not believe Boris Johnson can “provide the leadership” for the task ahead. The former education secretary, who had repeatedly said he had no leadership ambitions, dropped the surprise just hours before the nominations deadline on Thursday. The declaration is a devastating blow for Mr Johnson, who was expected to stand with the backing of the Justice Secretary. The pair campaigned side by side during the EU referendum campaign to secure the shock Brexit victory. But Mr Gove said events since last week had “weighed…
Stock markets and the pound have continued their uneasy recovery following the hammering of values in the wake of the UK’s EU referendum. The FTSE 100 was 2% up in morning trade on Wednesday – following on from a near-160 point or 2.6% rise on Tuesday, with markets worldwide also surging higher in a post-Brexit bounce back. The mid-cap FTSE 250 was up a further 1% while the pound also clawed back some more ground on the US dollar – trading at $1.34 having fallen to fresh 31-year lows earlier in the week. It was also higher against the euro at…
Toyota is recalling more than 1.4 million cars worldwide over faulty airbags – with some of those also facing fuel tank checks. The Japanese carmaker said almost 2.9 million Toyota and Lexus vehicles were covered by the fuel defect which concerned the possibility of a fire caused by cracks in fuel suction plates. The airbag recall affects 2010-2012 hybrid Prius and Lexus CT200h cars. It covers air bag inflators that could have a small crack in a weld, which could lead to the separation of the inflator chambers.
Vodafone has warned it could move its headquarters from the UK depending on the outcome of Britain’s negotiations to leave the European Union. The telecoms giant said in an emailed statement it was important to retain access to the EU’s free “movement of people, capital and goods”. It was too early to “draw any firm conclusions regarding the long-term location for the headquarters”. But Vodafone said that it would “take whatever decisions are appropriate”. Other businesses have expressed alarm at the vote to leave the EU and the consequences of not being part of the European single market.
Labour MPs are expected to announce a challenge to Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership after a motion of no confidence in him was supported by three-quarters of the parliamentary party. Two possible candidates are the party’s deputy leader Tom Watson and ex-shadow business secretary Angela Eagle. But Mr Corbyn has said he would not “betray” his supporters by resigning. He is expected to receive a warmer reception at a rally of his supporters on Wednesday. The SNP, meanwhile, is to ask the Speaker to declare it the official opposition at Westminster, claiming their Westminster leader Angus Robertson has more support than Mr Corbyn.
David Cameron says Britain “will not and should not” turn its back on Europe as it leaves the European Union. After discussing the vote to leave with other EU leaders, he said trade and security co-operation would be vital whatever the shape of future links. But he said immigration was a “great concern” among UK voters and squaring this with access to the EU single market would be a “huge challenge”. Germany’s Angela Merkel said the EU must “respect the result” of the vote. Mrs Merkel said the Brexit vote had been discussed “very intensively and deeply” at the dinner meeting…
