British house prices rose faster than forecast last month, rebounding from a dip in April caused by a new tax on rental property. Halifax said house prices rose by 0.6 percent in May, twice the rate forecast in a poll of economists and largely reversing April’s 0.8 percent dip. Royal Dutch Shell will exit oil and gas operations in up to 10 countries in a drive to deepen cost cuts and narrow its focus following its $54 billion acquisition of BG Group.Presenting its strategy following the close of that deal in February, the Anglo-Dutch company outlined plans to target annual spending of $25 billion to $30 billion until the end of the decade.Chief Executive Officer Ben van Beurden hopes the new cuts will help boost Shell’s shares, which have underperformed rivals since the BG deal was announced in April 2015.

University lecturers are threatening a marking and work-setting boycott in the autumn term in an escalation of their dispute with employers over pay.The row, which led to a two-day walkout last week, is over a 1.1% pay offer, which the Universities and Colleges Employers Association say is “good”. However, union general secretary Sally Hunt says the offer is an “insult”. The University College Union has also pledged to disrupt open days and graduations if it is not settled. Talks on zero-hours contracts and on improving lower pay for female academics have also been offered, they added.

Global airline industry profits are expected to jump by almost 12% in 2016, the International Air Transport Association (Iata) said.Lower oil prices will help airlines achieve profits of $39.4bn (£27.3bn) this year, compared to $35.3bn in 2015, the body said in its quarterly report.North American airlines will account for more than half of the industry’s profits, it said. However, Iata predicts a slowdown in passenger demand. It expects 6.2% growth in 2016, down from 7.4% in 2015.

Premier League Increasingly large TV deals are helping English Premier League clubs to enter “a new era of sustained financial performance”, according to Deloitte. It says the current TV deals saw Premier League clubs generate £3.3bn record revenues in 2014-15, up by 3%. Top flight clubs also recorded a second straight year of pre-tax profits in 2014-15, for the first time since 1999.
