British Gas is to offer free electricity for eight hours at weekends to two million customers who have smart meters installed. Customers will be able to choose whether to take advantage of the deal between 9am and 5pm on a Saturday or a Sunday. British Gas said consumers should see savings of about £60 a year. But experts said it will not necessarily be the cheapest deal on the market, and advised people to shop around with other suppliers. Most of British Gas’s 11 million customers will not be eligible, as only 2.4 million of these have smart meters.

The Bank of England governor has hinted at interest rate cuts as “monetary policy easing will likely be required” in the summer.In a speech at the Bank of England, Mark Carney said the uncertainty over Britain’s exit from the European Union – which he described as “a major regime shift” – had forced the bank to consider monetary stimulus over the coming months. Mr Carney said that Britain’s economic outlook had “deteriorated” as a result of the vote to leave the EU and that, at a meeting on 14 July, the bank’s policymakers would make an initial assessment.

Incidents of racism in the wake of the EU referendum have increased dramatically, according to the latest figures, since last Thursday figures have soared from an average of 63 to more than 300, police figures show.
