The British arm of Aldi has said that it will invest £300m in its stores after posting a 12% increase in sales to a record £7.7bn in 2015. The supermarket, named 2016 Grocer of the Year has announced record results for its last financial year alongside a major investment in its UK stores. The Foreign Secretary says the Government expects to invoke Article 50, which begins the process to leave the EU, by early 2017. Boris Johnson has said the process of leaving the EU does not need to take two years once Article 50 is invoked. Banks must shoulder more responsibility for money lost by people tricked into transferring it into a fraudster’s account, according to a “super-complaint” by Which? Patient safety at GP surgeries could be ‘at risk’ unless a “chronic shortage” of doctors is turned around, according to the Royal College of General Practitioners. It says that unless drastic action is taken to ensure there are enough doctors in the NHS, thousands of patients could be forced to travel miles to their nearest GP practice or be left stranded with no family doctor at all. Business confidence is at its lowest in four years amid increasing economic uncertainty and weaker demand after Britain’s vote to leave the EU, according to a report. The outlook for demand, employment and investment is weaker across all sectors of the economy, says research by Lloyds Bank. Vladimir Putin’s ruling party is set for victory in Russia’s parliamentary elections despite a dip in support, preliminary results suggest. United Russia received 44.5% of votes, according to an exit poll, compared to 49% in the previous election five years ago. Liberal opposition parties, the only group openly critical of President Putin, reportedly failed to get over the 5% threshold needed for party representation.
